Zvonko Basic

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Zvonko Basic, who left us on March 24, 2025, at the age of 84 years. Zvonko was born on June 16, 1940, in Zavidovici, Bosnia and Herzegovina, to Ana and Anton Basic. In the mid-1960s, he made the courageous decision to move to Canada, first arriving in Halifax and eventually making his way across the country to Vancouver.

Zvonko had five children: Monika, Stephanie, Anthony, Zvonimir, and Michael. He will be remembered by his children Monika (Wes) Sand, Stephanie (Jason) Sedore, Anthony (Vanessa) Basic, and Michael (Sidney) Basic, as well as his grandchildren Theresa, Nathan, Malcolm, Theo, Logan, and Aiden.

A hard-working and skilled tradesman, Zvonko was a high-ticketed welder and pipefitter, ultimately concluding his career as a Certified Welding Inspector. He was passionate about helping others and took great pride in assisting newcomers to Canada, particularly those from Europe, in settling into the Vancouver area. Zvonko's spirit of generosity extended to many building projects at St. Michael’s Parish, St. Michael’s School, and The Guildford Church of the Nazarene, where he volunteered his time and skills.

Zvonko was an avid traveler, enjoying countless trips across Canada, the US, and Europe. He was a great dancer, enjoyed a variety of music, and loved hosting friends and family at BBQs and social gatherings. His love of pets, extensive knowledge of cars, and particular fondness for Chrysler products were among his many passions. Zvonko was also a proud member of the Knights of Columbus.

Zvonko's warm smile and willingness to lend a helping hand will be missed by all who knew him. His legacy of kindness, generosity, and hard work will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.

The family would like to thank the staff at Surrey Memorial Hospital, The George Point Inn and the Melville Hospice Home for their kindness, care and compassion.
