Wai Yin Shum was born Wai Yin Cheung in Vietnam in 1927, the Year of the Rabbit, and passed away in Vancouver, Canada on December 4, 2012. She was the eldest of 8 siblings. She married in China in 1946 and in 1949, after having survived the KMT and Japanese occupation and escaping the Communists, moved to Hong Kong where she raised 3 children by herself while working as a seamstress.  She officially immigrated to Vancouver, Canada in 1979 to be with her youngest daughter and to help care for her grandchildren.  Mrs. Shum touched the lives of everyone who knew her and her fortitude and strength of character was an inspiration to all around her.  A persistent charmer and joker, Wai Yin Shum was never at a loss for good company or a helping hand from her friends, neighbors, and family.  She is survived by 7 siblings; her son, William; her 2 daughters, Anita and Sandy; her 6 grandchildren; and her 4 great-grandchildren who all loved and adored her. During the past few decades, she often enjoyed traveling to see her family from around the globe - from New York to Las Vegas, from Hong Kong to Singapore, and from Vancouver to Hawaii to San Diego, among other locations. She passed on December 4, 2012 in the company of her family members and will be laid to rest at Ocean View Burial Park on December 11th, in the company of family and friends. She will be sorely missed by all who were blessed to know her, and she will never be forgotten.
