Vivian Mary "Akiko" Miles (Yoneda) of Langley, B.C., beloved wife of the late Howard Miles, passed away peacefully in her sleep on August 16, 2023, at the age of 91.
Vivian was born in Victoria, B.C. on October 24, 1931, to parents Tomotaro and Toshiko Yoneda. She was the youngest of 6 children.
Vivian studied nursing at the College of Nursing - University of Saskatchewan. Upon graduating, Vivian became the first flight attendant of Japanese ancestry to join Trans Canada Airlines (TCA – now Air Canada). It was while working at TCA she met Howard, who also worked for TCA, and they married shortly after. They started their family in Lachine, Quebec where the first 6 of 8 children were born. They then relocated to Richmond, B.C where the family soon grew by 2 more children.
Upon retirement in 1991 she and Howard spent much of their time travelling and golfing. When asked how she could spend so much time on the golf course with her husband, she would reply “I just hit my ball to the other side of the fairway”. We all thought she should be declared a saint for putting up with Howie and the 8 children!
Vivian is lovingly remembered by her daughter Debbie (Brian) Anderson and her sons Mike (Mary), Richard, Ron, Gary, Steve (Michelle) and daughter in law Laura; 20 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Besides her loving husband Howard, Vivian was predeceased by her parents Tomotaro and Yoshiko; her siblings Robert, Marion, Barbara, Yoshitaro and Mary, as well as her children Robert and Kelly and her grandsons Kristopher and Raiden.
Vivian’s wish was for there to be no public service, rather that her children hold a private graveside service to lay her remains to rest alongside the remains of her husband Howard.
Flowers are respectfully declined.
