Veronica “Vreni” to her many friends and family, passed away surrounded by family, on August 13, 2019 in Vancouver at the age of 87. Vreni was born and raised in the picturesque Alps of Canton Graubunden in Switzerland. In 1958 Vreni and Andy married in Switzerland, honeymooned in Paris and started on their way to a new life in Canada where they settled down in Vancouver.
Unwavering in her kindness and empathy, she always knew the right thing to do and wholeheartedly dedicated herself to raising and caring for her family.
Vreni enjoyed many years participating and volunteering with the Vancouver based Swiss Society, Swiss Outdoors Club and Swiss Choir. Known as sweet, jovial and light hearted, Vreni skied and hiked alongside Andy and her friends into her mid seventies. Swiss German was her native tongue, but with a flair for languages and remembering childhood lessons, she was able to translate Romansh language lyrics for the Swiss Choir. Vreni was also a Red Cross volunteer for the Canadian Citizenship Court.
She also loved a good brisk walk to Spanish Banks and kept this up until her later years. Even during her struggles with PD, she soldiered on and never missed an opportunity to show appreciation to her family and caregivers. We will never forget how, at this time in her life, she continued to inspire us with her insight, and delight us with her humorous wit that had us roaring with laughter.
We love you Mom, Grandma, Vreni. “Tschau Vreni, Ruhe in Frieden”
Predeceased by sister, Klara “Klarli”, Vreni is survived and will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by husband Andy, daughter Monica (Bob), grandson Derry (Caroline), brother Peter (Christa) and godson, Andreas. Vreni also leaves behind extended family in Switzerland and Kamloops. B.C., including Leonie, Frank, niece Michelle and nephews Fred, Simon and James.
The family would like to thank Dr. Dakin and staff at VGH and Massi and Aurora of Safe Care Home Support.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Parkinson’s Society of B.C. or the Canadian Red Cross.
