Thomas Joseph Ryan, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, left this world as he arrived — on a beautiful fall day in October. He lived life with an enthusiasm that was both infectious and inspiring, and his spirit will forever shine brightly in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
Tom was, without a doubt, larger than life. He was a man of principle who was unafraid to speak his mind or come to the defense of those in need. A natural athlete and gifted storyteller, Tom could often be found captivating those around him with his quick-witted banter and charming smile. Eccentric in the best possible ways, he had an innate ability to forge friendships with people from all walks of life and will be fondly remembered for his love of conversation and sense of humor.
His adventurous spirit took him around the globe, always choosing the road less traveled. From playing cribbage atop the Great Pyramid of Giza to backpacking through Europe and Africa, he never passed on an adventure or opportunity. His love of exploration was especially evident in his journeys through British Columbia, where he made a career out of sharing its wonders with the world. Tom’s presence was felt in every town, village, and inlet in the province, and he took great pride in the relationships he forged along the way.
Few relationships were stronger than those he had with his brothers, Jimmy, Terry, and Danny. Fondly known collectively as “The Fighting Ryans,” they faced life's challenges together with grace and dignity. As the youngest son of Carmen and Rody, Tom learned from a young age the importance of hard work and family—values that would become the driving forces throughout his life. He shared a deep and loving partnership with his devoted wife, Mika, for 40 wonderful years. He was immensely proud of his son, Tyler, and daughter-in-law, Lee, and he cherished his granddaughter, Yumi, whom he affectionately declared to be the most beautiful baby he had ever seen. Tom will also be fondly remembered by his in-laws, nephews, and nieces, all of whom share their own unforgettable experiences with “Uncle Tom.”
Tom leaves behind a legacy of love, adventure, and laughter. He was truly one of a kind, and his absence will be deeply felt by everyone privileged to know him. In honoring Tom's memory, hug the people you love. Remember his zest for life, unwavering kindness, and ability to bring joy to every moment. Though he may have left this world, his spirit will forever remain a guiding light for those he loved.
