Thomas Herbert Rutherford (Tom)
July 15, 1958 - August 2, 2020
Sunday, August 2, 2020. Predeceased by his parents Hugh Joseph (Jud) and June (nee Kelly) and survived by his sister Jane (Jim Winder) and Kelly (Mary Lynn) and nephews Kyle and Chris, and nieces Megan and Stacey.
Tom grew up in Ottawa, attended Fisher Park High School, and completed an honours degree in Commerce, Finance and business at the University of Ottawa. He started his banking career right out of university and worked at Canada Trust, Canada Permanent, and Royal Trust which was ultimately acquired by Royal Bank. He recently received recognition of his successful 30 year career with the Royal Bank. Along the way he built stellar relationships with long term clients that loved working with him, and Tom made many lifelong friends along the way.
Tom had a love for, and dedication to exercise and 'healthy living' and it is a lifestyle and commitment that he was always proud of.
He was especially proud to go back to school and complete his Masters of Business Administration degree at Queen's University in 2011. In 2013 he moved out to Vancouver with the plan to return to Ottawa when he retired. Before those plans came to fruition, he bravely tackled his cancer diagnosis, and gave it his all to try to beat it.
Sincerest gratitude to Vancouver Coastal Health, Three Bridges Community Health Centre, the BC Cancer Agency, and the various health care team members that supported Tom through his two year journey with cancer. Special note of thanks to Dr Tamir Ailon, Dr Andrei Krassioukov, Dr. Alan M. Nichol, Dr. Brian Thiessen, Nurse Practitioners Rosemary, Sandra and Parveen and BC Cancer agency counselor - Tracy S.
A big shout out and thanks to Dr Stephen Peach for his care and compassion right to the end. Thanks to the MAID program through the BC Cancer Agency for allowing Tom the option to decide on how he could live his life, and when he could leave the physical world. He died peacefully at age 62 at his Vancouver home on August 2, 2020.
As per Tom's wishes there is no visitation. Instead, please take a moment to thank those that are important in your life and gift someone with some dedicated time. In lieu of flowers, donations to the BC Cancer Foundation would be deeply appreciated.
