In loving memory of Thomas Fergus “Fergie “Savage, our beloved dad, husband, papa, brother, uncle and friend. Fergus was born on November 1, 1940 in Birmingham, England, to Maureen and Edwin Savage (brother to Edwin, Vanessa and Jane). Fergus peacefully departed on January 30, 2024 surrounded by his family.
Fergus is survived by his selfless , devoted and loving wife of 46 years , Sherill, and children Stephanie Dumas ( Tim, children : Gemma , Dominic , Damian, Sarah, Philippa and Caleb)Paul Savage ( Chelsea, children: Eloise, Blaise, Cameron and Rebecca) Michael Savage ( Devin, children : Bernadette and Bobby- Fergus ) Angela Stewart ( David ) and Gabriel Savage( children ,Jude and grandchild number fourteen due in April) also survived by his siblings Edwin , Vanessa and Jane , and numerous nieces and nephews .
Fergus became an expert in many areas related to his work and passion for long haul truck driving, even driving a big rig across a frozen Beaufort Sea. He dedicated a majority of his life to commercial vehicle safety (President of the CVSA), and after a lengthy career retired as manager of fleet Safety with ICBC. He went on to instruct at the JIBC and facilitated and instructed specialized high-level traffic / vehicle reconstruction and driving courses to numerous police agencies throughout the province and even travelled to the UAE to help in instructing with the Advanced international police training programs, as well as run his own consulting business. He dedicated numerous years to the VPD motorcycle drill team and became an honorary member of the team where he would passionately and so proudly be involved with for over thirty years. He was a big part of the Royal City Youth Soccer Club as a coach as well as served as referee in Chief. He was an active and devout parishioner at St. Michaels for over 30 years.
In his early days of retirement, he travelled, along with the love of his life, Sherill to the Holy land, Mexico, Alaska, Rome, Spain, Portugal (to name a few) and numerous times the two would hit the open road and just drive, usually ending up somewhere along the ocean.
He will be forever missed by all that knew him for his legendary handshake, his faith, his compassion, humility, his cheerful disposition, his infectious smile, and his devotion to his family, especially his wife, Sherill.
Fergus was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and fought a lengthy and courageous battle, with grace and courage until the very end. On behalf of his grateful family, a heartfelt thank you to all of the care staff and individuals who helped in caring for him over the last while.
May his memory, his faith and his infectious smile bring comfort to everyone who had the privilege of knowing and loving him.
Eternal rest grant unto him oh Lord and let perpetual life shine upon him. May his soul rest in peace.
Prayers will be offered Sunday, February 11, 2024 at 7:00 p.m., and Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, February 12, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Michael's Catholic Church, 9387 Holmes Street, Burnaby, BC.
