Thomas Joseph Boyle has passed away, at the age of 92, after a long and fulfilling life. Surrounded by caring family, he died at home after a period of decline from age-related conditions. Tom is survived by his wife of 64 years Marjorie and six children Cathleen (Rich), Jim (Nancy), Eleanor (Harley), Margot (Phil), John (Orie) and Andrew. Tom also leaves six grandchildren Alison, Christine, Jaclyn, Sean, Katherine, and Lisa and great-grandchildren Aaron and Zoe, as well as one sister Anna McIntyre of Boston, and many nieces and nephews in a large extended family. Born in 1921 in Regina as one of eight children, Tom had a happy childhood on the farm and around the family-owned King's Hotel where he learned valuable lessons about business and human nature. He talked often about his youth there and about his memorable summer jobs as a bellboy at the Banff Springs Hotel. Tom attended Campion College in Regina and then earned a B.A. and later a Bachelor of Commerce. During WWII he served in both the Army and the Air Force. Stationed at one point in Vancouver, he fell in love with the city. He later moved here, where he met his future wife Marjorie Hamblin. They married in 1950 and raised six children. Tom had a distinguished career in real estate. He headed the department of commercial and industrial real estate at Macaulay Nicolls Maitland, and later became President of the Company. He also served as President of the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver. An expert bridge player, Tom was a key participant in a daily bridge group at the Marine Drive Golf Club, a club of which he was a member for more than 60 years. He was also a long-time member of the Vancouver Club, which he used to joke got you an extra line in your obituary. A man of many accomplishments, Tom was a determined person who delighted everyone by passing his driver's re-exam just a few months ago at the age of 92. Tom was known for his humour and direct manner; was confident in his values and didn't worry about what others thought. He did it his way. Tom provided well for his family; led by example through integrity and hard work and encouraged his children to do what they wanted with their lives. Generous and liberal-minded, Tom treated everyone equally and valued people from any and all backgrounds and groups. His passions included golf, bridge, fishing, spending time with family and enjoying his cabin on the Sunshine Coast. The family extends its sincere thanks to Dr. Duncan Miller for his skilled and compassionate care. We also thank our home-care nurses and Vancouver Coastal Health community nursing staff. A Funeral Mass will be held at the church of St. John the Apostle, at 39th and Trafalgar, on Thursday, September 11, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider doing something thoughtful for someone in your own life.
