MURPHY- Thelma Aileen (Murph) Murphy, passed away from natural causes on Sunday, January 13, 2008 in West Vancouver, British Columbia in her 86th year. She was predeceased by her parents, William Austin Murphy (1876-1951) and Laura Patricia Saunders (1890-1955); sisters Marguerite, Laura, Alma, Reta (Toddy) and brother Bill; niece Sharon, nephew Stewart and best friend, Betty French. She will be fondly remembered by neices, Maureen, Kim (Jeff), Kelley (Willie), nephews William, Lawrence and Donald (Lynn), and great nieces and nephews Katie, Shannon, Stephanie, Melissa and Christopher. Her extended family includes brothers-in-law Bill, Bud, and Gene, sisters-in-law Lil, friend and neighbor Claire and cousins in Alberta and Saskatchewan. Thelma was born in Winnipeg in 1922, moved to Saskatoon in 1926, Battleford in 1936 and Vancouver in 1947. Murph enjoyed athletics, especially baseball, curling and golf. As a teenager, she was invited to join a professional women's baseball team in Chicago. She declined and started a banking career. During her 36 years with the bank of Montreal, Thelma held a number of positions before becoming one of the first women bank managers in Canada in 1968. She retired in 1980 after managing branches in Vancouver and North and West Vancouver. Murph enjoyed travel and the outdoors. For over 30 years many good times were shared with family and friends at the cottage at Lac La Hache, BC. She also made many life long friends through her other sports pastimes particularly curling and earned the respect of many others through participation in community organizations such as the Vancouver Professional Women's League, athletic clubs and the Catholic Women's League. She loved to read and had a keen interest in all things. Always warm and generous, Murph has inspired us with her strength, integrity and accomplishments. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, January 18, 2008 at 11:00am at Christ the Redeemer Church, 599 Keith Rd, West Vancouver, Rev. Msgr. Greg Smith, PH celebrant. Interment at Capilano Cemetery, West Vancouver.
