It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Sylvia. She was born in New Westminster and grew up in the lower mainland. She was a devoted sister to Ray and David. While attending SFU she met Luis Duran and made some lifelong friends. After graduating they married on June 26th, 1979 settling in North Delta before moving to New Westminster where they have lived for 40 years raising three boys.
Sylvia worked at Woodlands Hospital before moving over to the MVB which then merged with ICBC where she worked for 25 years after which she retired in 2009 to spend time with Luis.
Sylvia enjoyed many happy years of travel and sharing her love with family and friends from going to the movies, dining out or hosting family dinners.
Luis and she enjoyed travelling prior to raising a family. Once they had their boys they took them to Mexico 3 times as well as multiple trips to Disneyland. As well as taking their first cruise to Alaska and going to Egypt. Once retired, they travelled to China, Spain and France, including a Mediterranean cruise with stops in Greece, Italy and Turkey as well as visiting Cuba and the Panama Canal with good friends. Most recently she has taken her grandchildren to her favourite place, Disneyland.
During summers she enjoyed spending time with family at their cottage on Hatzic Lake where she enjoyed relaxing, celebrating Canada Day and the Labour Day weekend corn roast.
Sylvia was always generous with her time and spent 25 years volunteering with Scouts Canada, continuing long after her boys were no longer involved.
She became involved in Beta Sigma Phi Sorority where she built close friendships and enjoyed many activities and fun outings, such as the Black Friday shopping trips. She enjoyed a variety of roles including president of her chapter and being a Secret Sister.
Sylvia leaves behind the aforementioned life full of challenges conquered and dreams fulfilled. She will be painfully missed by her husband Luis, her sons James, Stephen and Andrew as well as her grand children Raphael, Max, Dominique, Gavin and Jason.
A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Helen’s Anglican church, 10787 128th street, Surrey, BC at 2 pm on Wednesday, March 28th with pastor Stephen Laskey.
