With Great sadness and sorrow, I announce the passing away of my mother, Sumiye Sasaki, on February 23, 2012 at the age of 93. She was predeceased by her husband, Shigetaka, daughter Takako, son Michitaka, and her brother, Seiki.

She was born in Vancouver on October 5, 1918. She lived in Vancouver for most of her life except for time interned in Tashme and the years living in Ashcroft from 1946 to 1967. Throughout her life’s journey, she faced many adversities but overcame each with hard work, determination, and an amazing attitude toward meeting life’s next challenge. She loved working with her hands – knitting, crocheting, dressmaking, and designing, playing the piano, and cooking.

To those who came into her life, she always greeted them with warmth and a gentle smile. She will be forever loved and missed by her daughter Rumi, her sister-in-law Marie and Marie’s sons, Gordon and David Nagami, as well as, by many relatives and friends here and in Japan.

Many thanks to Dr. Peter House for being mother’s comforting and caring physician. Thanks also to the many health care professionals who have cared for my mother over the years, and most recently, those at Vancouver General Hospital.

Fulfilling my mother’s request, there will not be a funeral service. A memorial will take place at a later date.
