Murrey Elkey was born in Vernon BC on December 5, 1946 to Edna & Steve Elkey. He passed away peacefully at the age of 78 at Chilliwack General Hospital on February 10, 2025 with his family by his side. Murrey spent his early years in Summerland, BC, where he embraced the simple joys of life—picking wild asparagus along Trout Creek. His bicycle basket was often brimming with fresh produce destined for dinner. In 1964, the family moved to Chilliwack, where Murrey continued to grow and thrive. Murrey's career began at Brett’s Chev Olds in Chilliwack, where he worked for many years before retiring from Corrections Canada. Murrey was a passionate outdoorsman, whom had a deep love for hunting, especially duck hunting in the valley. He was often seen with his truck and duck blinds in the local spots in Agassiz & Rosedale. Murrey's enthusiasm extended beyond hunting; he was an avid fisherman and gardener. His garden flourished each year, and the many bushels of vegetables he grew were generously shared with family and friends. Dad also found joy in his workshop, where he crafted beautiful wooden pieces, turning raw material into treasured works of art. Countless days were spent on the Fraser River, catching salmon and trout, with his harvest always preserved for later enjoyment. Murrey is survived by his children, Darryl Elkey (Kim), Christopher Elkey, Rachel Lucas (Brent), as well as grandchildren Logan Elkey (Brooke), Kersten Elkey (Malachi), Olivia Lucas, Nicholas Lucas, and great-grandchild Mason Elkey. He will also be remembered by his brothers Brian Elkey, Douglas Elkey, and brother-in-law David Janzen (Rosana) and nephews Kevin & Michael. Murrey has now reunited with his beloved wife, Margaret Elkey (Janzen). Murrey is preceded by both his father Steve Elkey, mother Edna Elkey as well as his sister Jennifer Elkey, brother Philip Elkey (Mariam) and sister in-law Susan Andrews (Douglas). The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the staff at the Chilliwack General Hospital for their care and support during this time. A small family gathering will take place at a later date to honor Murrey’s life. Those wishing to make a donation in Murrey’s memory can do so to BC Cancer Society. Grandpa's well-worn duck calls will echo in our memories, his gardens will continue to bloom in our hearts, and the handcrafted treasures he created will forever remind us of his skilled hands. The lessons he shared with us will continue to shape future generations.
