Harold Siew Poh Lim lived life with great enthusiasm, pursuing many hobbies, engaging in numerous business and community ventures, and remaining deeply interested about the wonders of the world until his death.
Born in Singapore, Harold was the youngest of 10 children of Lim Teck Boo and Giam Cheng Kiat, immigrants from Fujian, China. He grew up on a coconut estate and was educated at Anglo-Chinese School (ACS). His carefree childhood, his teenage years under Japanese occupation, and his early entrepreneurial adventures are chronicled in his memoir, A Singapore Life.
A successful stockbroker in Singapore, he established Lim Trading Company in the sixties, and was later partner of Chan Lim Securities, and a director of Consolidated Hotels Ltd., a public company. He became a life member of the Singapore Island Country Club, and was an excellent golfer, with a single handicap and a hole-in-one. He was also an associate of the Royal Photographic Society.
Harold immigrated to Vancouver, B.C. in 1975. He was owner of Northshore Toyota for several years and was a commercial real estate broker and investor before retiring in the eighties. He then took up community work with the Maple Leaf Cultural Association and enjoyed dancing, gardening and photography.
Harold was the beloved husband of Chin Boon; father of Roland Tuan Kheng (Evelyn), Gloria Bee Yong (died in infancy), David Tuan Seng (Mei Ling), and Constance Bee Bee; and grandfather of Patricia and Christopher Lim, Deniz and Alexander Lim-Sersan, and Hayley and Derek Lim. His positive spirit and love of learning inspired us all and he will be dearly missed.
