Shun Wah 'Betty' Ip passed away peacefully on March 9th, 2023.
Betty developed edema symptoms in late November 2022, and imaging later confirmed metastatic cancer. She was hospitalized on Jan 21st and due to the progression of symptoms, it was decided that hospice care was most appropriate. Betty was later transferred to Vancouver Hospice Society where she spent her remaining days. She died peacefully with her son at her side.
Betty was born in Canton, China on July 9, 1933. Her parents (more so her mother who was very famous at the time) performed Chinese Opera and thus Betty experienced 'show business' life in her early years.
Her family later settled in Hong Kong, where in 1967, Betty met her future husband, Tai Wai 'David' Ip. David later moved to San Francisco in 1969 (as a student) and Betty soon followed. Betty gave birth to their son Simon in 1971, and thereafter they lived in San Francisco until 1976, when they emigrated to Vancouver, Canada and have lived ever since.
Betty will be remembered as a very kind, loving and generous person (who likes to knit and give knitted scarves, hats and sweaters as gifts), but more over as a devoted wife and mother. As a homemaker, she tirelessly managed the household on a daily basis. Not only did this include taking her son to and from school multiple times a day (this included lunch hour), but also picking up her husband from UBC at the end of the work day. This continued until Simon graduated high school. In addition, when David got ill and received a diagnosis of advanced diabetes in 1980, Betty had to carefully prepare meals to adjust to his nutritional needs. Even as David eventually retired in 1998 and was at home, and as her son began working and was more independent, Betty continued as a homemaker. With the many sacrifices that she made, she had little time to expand her circle of friends and family. This changed however in 2008 when her son married. Betty was welcomed into the Mui Family and she welcomed Christina into her heart, whom she loved like her own daughter. Truly as a wife, a mother, and mother in-law, there was and is no comparison.
Betty leaves behind David her husband, Simon her son, and Christina her daughter in-law, all of whom will deeply miss her.
Betty, Rest in Peace.
The family is holding a private visitation at Kearney Funeral Services in Vancouver on March 14th, with a private burial at Ocean View Cemetery on March 17th.
