Rankin, Shirley Gertrude Claire passed away peacefully and unexpectedly on November 12, 2021 in Vancouver at the age of 74.
She is predeceased by father Robert Clarence Rankin (1953), sister Donna Manweiler (2015), mother Gertrude Manweiler (2015) and step-father Herbert Manweiler (2018).
She is lovingly remembered by sister Katherine Rankin (Hugh Semple), brother-in-law Bob McGillivray (Josee Kroon), nephews Robin Bolton (Neda), Brendan McGillivray (Mel), Justin McGillivray (Christine), nieces Rachel Bolton, Jasmine McGillivray and grand niece Mackenzie Bolton. Shirley will be greatly missed by life-long friend Sharon McIntee Birrell. She worked long term at Adanac/Rutherford Global and will be missed by the staff there. She will be greatly missed by numerous family, friends, colleagues and community who are the richer for having known her.
Shirley was born in Calgary and grew up in Edmonton, Alberta. She moved to Vancouver in 1968 and fell in love with the city. She enthusiastically participated in all the city had to offer, including ocean and mountain sports. In recent years, she was an active supporter of the arts in Vancouver and avid participant in the Vancouver International Film Festival.
Shirley had a loving and wicked sense of humour. Sadly, her warm and infectious laughter is silenced. Shirley was a gifted artist, her work had depth, meaning and beauty. She loved to travel - her favourite destination was Hawaii. We will miss her down-to-earth practicality, classy style and her signature hair - flaming red and later glowing silver.
A celebration of Shirley’s life will be held at a private gathering of friends and family at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre.
