Russell passed away peacefully just two weeks after the passing of his wife May. Russ is survived by his three sons Gordon (Mary), Ron (Trudy), and Jim (Brenda), nine grandchildren (Rebecca, James, Rachel, Stephen, Curtis, Corissa, Sean, Kristopher and Jacquelyn), and four great-grandchildren (Eva, Noah, Jesse, and Isaac.) He was predeceased by his wife May and his sister Anne McCluskie. Russell was born in Port Arthur, Ontario and moved to B.C. as a young boy. He graduated from John Oliver High School, and then the University of Oregon. He began teaching in 1948 and was a high school PE teacher and coach until his retirement in 1984. He and May were married in 1951, moved to the Dunbar neighbourhood where they raised their boys and lived out their years. Russ was an active supporter of all sports and served as coach and referee. He was honoured to be a lifetime member of the BC Soccer Association. Russ and May enjoyed their summers at Pender Harbour and their winter vacations in Maui. The family would like to extend their deep appreciation to the home caregivers (Nora and Haidee), Dr. Bruce Gibson and the Home-VIVE Program staff, who provided compassionate care over the past four years. A memorial reception to celebrate Russ's life will be held at Shaughnessy Golf Club on Sunday March 9th, 2014, 2:00 - 4:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the CNIB would be greatly appreciated.
