The family of Ruby Mary Chater is sad to announce her passing, on August 16, 2022, after two years with cancer.
Ruby will be remembered by her nieces and nephews, April James Stannel, Doug James (Doris), Laurie James, Rick Cridge, Elizabeth Cridge O’Brien (Gerry), and their families. Ruby is predeceased by her mother and father, Frances Douglass Chater and Fred Chater, her sisters, Alice, Betty, Freda, Peggy, and Jane, her nieces, Terry and Trish, and her great-grand nephew, Stephen.
Born at home on Beach Avenue, Vancouver, Ruby was comfortable living most of her life in the west end, as everything was within walking distance, and she could greet her many four-legged doggie friends. Ruby worked as a secretary, mostly in the legal field. She enjoyed walking, reading, music, and needlework, all being hobbies that kept her busy in her retirement, alongside the dragon boat festivals, jazz festivals, CBC nooner concerts, and raiding library book sales. Most of all, Ruby’s great love was travel. She made sure to take the time to travel around the globe in the sixties, stopping to work in England and Australia. Ruby’s last big trip was in 1990, when she drove throughout the United States and Eastern Canada.
The family would like to thank the staff at the BC Cancer Agency for their kindness, care, and support for Ruby over the last two years.
As a private person, Ruby did not wish to have a formal service. So instead, please remember her when you see cruise ships coming in and out of ports, while enjoying your next Tim Horton's coffee and whenever you receive a friendly greeting from a dog and their owner.
