Ruben was born in Colonia Menno, Chaco, Paraguay. Ruben was the 7th child in a family of 9 children. His name, Ruben, means “a son at last” as he had 1 older brother and 5 older sisters, and was then followed by two more younger brothers. Ruben’s family left Paraguay in 1960 to go to Steinbach and Thompson Manitoba, then moved to B.C. in 1966.

Predeceased by mother Tina (Toews) and father Heinrich Unger. Ruben is survived by his son Cole Unger, daughter Shaina Kendrick (Peter) and grandson Levi, and Susan Zonailo (Nick). He is also survived by siblings Henry (Berta), Ruth, Martha, Tina, Lil, Klara (Perry), George (Lauren), and Jake. Ruben was so blessed to have many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, a large group of friends and business associates, and his honorary brother Zahi.  Also remembered by G. Young, Holly (Andrew) Funaro and their children Lucas and Roman.

Ruben grew up working alongside his father as a finishing carpenter and after high school went on to become an ironworker. After an accident in 1984 Ruben changed careers and started his own commercial and residential construction company. Ruben loved hunting and fishing and sharing in these activities with family and friends. He was a talented artist, creating many beautiful granite sculptures. Behind a tough exterior Ruben was a kind and generous man, always there to help his family, friends and strangers.

Ruben fought a valiant 10-month battle with cancer and passed away peacefully with his children at his bedside. A private cremation will take place by request. We will be holding a celebration of life to share laughter, love, and memories when we can safely gather. Ruben always enjoyed a party, good food and drink, and of course a good joke.
