We are deeply saddened to announce that in the last minutes of January 15, 2010 Roy "Shuffled off this mortal coil." Grieving his passing are: Maura, his wife of 57 years, sons Derek (Sandy), Peter (Lynn), Brian, and Kevin. Predeceased by his sister Joyce, Roy leaves behind brothers and sisters Geoff (Anne), David (Enid), Pauline (Geoffrey), the triplets, Barry, Clive and Yvonne. Grandchildren Jay and Conor, many nieces and nephews, fellow parishioners and friends too numerous to list, whose lives were enriched by Roy's empathy, humour, integrity and sage advice. Some highlights of Roy's long and varied career and life experiences included service as a British Royal Marine, bacteriologist and lab technician for several employers, first aid instructor and examiner, WCB First Aid Dept., manager, Grand Knight of Knights of Columbus. With his wife Maura, they were deeply involved with Marriage Encounter for 20 years, leading by example, teaching, counselling and coaching couples to reinvigorate their relationships. Roy and Maura also volunteered for Meals on Wheels, fostered several stray and troubled youths in their home over the years and contributed to foster children overseas for decades. Born into poverty in Manchester, England in 1929, Roy experienced in his childhood years the bombing of his school and the loss of school chums during World War II. After serving 2 memorable years in the British Marines, Roy worked in a hospital laboratory in Manchester. During a bout of appendicitis Roy was hospitalized and nursed by Maura Mcdermott. They fell in love and were married in Manchester England in May 1952. In 1953, they immigrated to Canada with $40 to their name, going on to become a classic immigrant success story, pioneers for the Luty family in this country. Through many hardships, tragedies and challenges, to the end of his life, Roy never lost his gentle, omnipresent sense of humour, kindness and selfless compassion. "If you wish to see his monument, look around you." Funeral services will take place on Friday, January 22nd, at 11:00 a.m., at St. Bernadette Parish, located at 6543 - 132nd St., Surrey, British Columbia.
