Ronald Ray Hill

February 5, 1946 — March 24, 2025

Burnaby

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Ron Hill on March 24th, 2025. Ron will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 47 years, Maureen, his daughters, Angela and Carly (Scott), and his granddaughters, Ella, Zoe, Violet, and Paige. He was predeceased by his sisters Norma and Betty and his brother Tom. He leaves behind his sister Margaret, brothers, Arthur and Mervyn, and many nieces and nephews who have fond memories of their fun-loving Uncle Ron.

Ron was born in Brisbane, Australia, and travelled to Canada in 1969. He loved skiing, hiking, canoeing, camping, watersports, and fishing opportunities in Canada and decided to stay.

He worked for BC Millwork as a joiner in the 70’s and in 1981 became a joinery instructor at BCIT. He loved his work and found he enjoyed teaching. From 1984 to 1986 Ron was seconded to the BCIT Learning and Teaching Center where he worked as a subject matter expert to develop learning materials for the Joinery apprenticeship program. They became a foundation for apprenticeship training in BC.

In his spare time, Ron put his talents to work. He enjoyed building furniture, helping others with their projects, and renovating his home in Burnaby. He spent many happy hours in his garage. He also loved photography, and his favourite subjects were wildlife, landscapes, and flowers. Many of his photos were taken on camping, canoeing trips, and in the garden of his home in Burnaby.

In 1999 Ron was diagnosed with Parkinson’s and faced his limitations with strength and determination. As his disease progressed, he developed new interests that would allow him to be as active and involved as possible. Fishing was his passion, and he learned to fly fish and to tie flies. When photography and fishing became too difficult, Ron decided to become a HAM radio operator and enjoyed communicating from his HAM shack with fellow HAMs. He was a member of the Burnaby Amateur Radio Club and when able, acted as a HAM volunteer. He also volunteered for years for the Burnaby Block Watch program.

Many thanks to the friends, family members, caregivers, health professionals, and staff of George Derby Centre who helped support Ron and his family over the years.

At all times Ron remained positive, resilient, and dedicated to his family and friends, to his work, and to his community.

Rest in peace, Ron. You will be forever missed.

Donations in his memory can be made to the Parkinsons Society of BC or the Wildlife Rescue Association.
