Robin finally defeated Alzheimer's disease by being welcomed into the arms of her Jesus. Born to Ruth and Bill Powell (both deceased) and schooled in Victoria, Robin moved to Port Alberni, BC in 1977 to teach elementary music. There, through church, she met and married her husband of 38 years, Jory Mitchell. She gave birth to their daughters Tara Morgan (husband Paul, children Avelynn, Bailey, Colton and Charlotte) and Jenna Maxwell (husband Colin, children Connor, Austin and Harrison). She constantly strove to be the best mother possible.

Robin was the top soprano in Western Canada through the Toronto Royal Conservatory of Music while at UVic, earning a Music Degree in Voice Performance. While attending NABC Bible School for one year in Edmonton, she traveled through 2/3 of the U.S. and Canada on a gospel team and choir; a high point musically for Robin.

She left a legacy of musical excellence in her beloved Port Alberni. She began the Christmas Festival of Choirs highlighting school, church and community choirs throughout the valley, which ran for 37 years. She directed many choirs in her schools, church and community. She directed 2 teen choirs and the Little Kingdom Choir. She also performed leading roles in musical theatre in Port Alberni. In School District 70, she promoted choral excellence starting ChoirFest and was a strong member of the Music Teachers Association. The 11,000 students she taught over 32 years loved her. She made them feel noticed and loved and she always brought out their inner musical excellence.

But more importantly she left a legacy of loving people and her Lord Jesus. Her love of family, gift of hospitality, generosity, care for her friends, as well as the hurting and lonely, shone brightly. Robin served in countless activities in church, whether Sunday School, prayer groups, Alpha or Home Groups. She loved friends from all the churches in her city. Her home was a perfect place for her to love her family, friends, neighbours and even strangers.

She and Jory, upon his retirement, moved to Vancouver in 2009 to be close to their daughters as she began her journey in earnest with Alzheimer's disease. Jory cared for Robin for 5 years in their home until her needs were too great for he alone to meet. In 2014, she moved into Yaletown House. She never fought that move knowing that it was only a matter of time before her needs would require more care. Her beautiful spirit was enjoyed by all at Yaletown House especially the dedicated and loving staff who cared for her over her last 4 years on this earth. Gratitude and trust were the two greatest gifts she gave to all who provided her care. Jory walked his beautiful wife Home as she peacefully slipped into eternity to live with her Jesus on the morning of May 27th, 2018.

Celebrations of Life for Robin will be held in Vancouver at Culloden Mennonite Church on June 25th at 7 p.m. and in Port Alberni at Jericho Road Church on July 3rd at 3:30 p.m. Donations can be made to the Alzheimers Society of BC.
