It is with great sadness that the family announces that Richard Douglas Grant passed away in Vancouver, B.C. on March 7, 2013. Douglas lived a life far too short but lived largely in the 58 years he shared with us. Douglas was born on March 8, 1955 in Calgary, Alberta where he acquired most of his primary and secondary education. Nurturing a strong will to travel and study foreign cultures and languages, Douglas spent time in Europe and Asia before completing his BA in Political Science at the University of Calgary in 1977. Never one to stop reading and learning, Douglas also completed a Masters degree at SFU in Computer Science. Throughout his life, Douglas was passionate about many things, including international politics, the environment and sustainability. One of many gifts was his proficiency with language, having the ability to express in a few words what might take others many. Everyone who knew Douglas will miss his quiet smile, quick wit and irrepressible sense of humor.
Douglas will be forever missed by his loving wife of over 22 years, Patricia (Trish) Miller, her extended family, his parents, David B. and Sylvia Grant of Calgary, his sister Marilyn Schmidt (Dave) of Calgary and his brother David F. Grant (Catherine) of Singapore. Douglas had a special place in his large heart for his four nieces, Christie, Jaclyn, Casey, and Kendra. A memorial service will be held on March 15, 2013 at 2:30 PM at the West Point Grey United Church at 4595 West 8th Avenue, Vancouver. Due to Douglas’ profound love of animals, the family has asked that in lieu of flowers, a contribution be made to the BC SPCA on his behalf.
