Roy Schofer was born in Kindersley, Saskatchewan on July 30th, 1930. He passed away peacefully at Granville Gardens Retirement Home on November 25th, 2017. He is survived by his son Roger, his daughter Joanna, his grandson Jackson and his siblings Joy and Clifford. He was predeceased by his middle child Drew.
Dr. Roy Schofer was a very successful anesthesiologist who worked at VGH and Lionsgate Hospital. When he retired, he went back to work at the Cambie Clinic. He was an outstanding doctor who was well respected by all who knew him. He had a great love for his job and a superior work ethic. His peers admired him greatly.
Roy married his wife Joan in Alabama in 1957. She died two years ago after the two shared an extremely happy life together. The two travelled extensively over the years to exotic places such as Egypt and Israel.
Roy bravely ventured to Nepal with his son on a climbing expedition. Roy and Joan loved animals and had several cats over the years. They always rescued their pets from animal shelters and never met a cat they didn’t like.
In his youth, Roy used to run several times a week. He faced the future bravely when his wife passed away. He continued to walk around Langara Golf Course and around his Oakridge neighbourhood until old age started to slow him down.
Roy was a wonderful friend and father. His grandson Jackson spent a great deal of time with him, and the two even went on the Rocky Mountain Express to Banff one summer.
The family would like to thank the staff of Granville Gardens, Vancouver Coastal health and Qualicare for their care of Roy in his last days. As Roy was an avid supporter of many charities, we would like donations made to the Canadian Cancer Agency in lieu of flowers.
There will be a Memorial Service On Thursday, December 7th at 11AM at Redeemer Lutheran Church 1499 Laurier Avenue
