Professor Woods passed away on August 15,2024. He was predeceased by his daughter Kelly and his devoted wife of 68 years, Carol. He is survived by his daughter Catherine and son Michael as well as his 10 grandchildren to whom he was a loving Dadda.
Professor Woods was one of the world’s foremost logicians. He received his BA and MA in philosophy from the University of Toronto and his PhD from the University of Michigan in 1962. He taught philosophy at the University of Toronto and then became Chair of the department of philosophy at the University of Victoria. He went on to become the founding Dean of Humanities at the University of Calgary and thereafter served as the President of the University of Lethbridge. Professor Woods was also the past president of the Royal Society of Canada and held the Charles S Peirce Professorship of Logic at Kings College, London.
Professor Woods finished his teaching career at the University of British Columbia where he was the honorary Professor of Logic. He was a superb and inspirational teacher, beloved by his students. He was the author of many learned books and papers and continued writing and publishing up until his death.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Augustine’s Church, 2028 West 7th Avenue, Vancouver on Wednesday the 28th of August at 11 o’clock.
