Phyllis was born in Washington DC to Ruby and George Phillip Johnson. She graduated from Western Maryland (now McDaniel) College and completed training as a medical laboratory technologist at George Washington University Hospital. It was there that she met Ian, a medical student entering his final year of medical school. They married in 1958, after Ian’s graduation before friends and classmates disbursed. They enjoyed sixty six years of marriage with rarely an angry word and led an active and at times adventurous life. Phyllis was an original and long-serving and knowledgeable guide at VanDusen Garden, a member of the Vancouver Natural History Society (now Nature Vancouver) and a Christmas Bird Counter for many years.
Phyllis was a wonderful wife, mother and friend. She endured seventeen years in a wheelchair following a cerebral hemorrhage in 2008 without complaint. She will be greatly missed by her husband Ian, son Donald (Estelle), daughter Jean, grandsons Antoine, Simon, Zakary and Angus as well as her sister Joann.
A sincere thanks to the caregivers at Sunrise Vancouver and Arbutus Care Centre.
Goodbye my dear Phyllis.
I hope to see you soon in the morning.
