Phillip passed away suddenly on Thursday, June 30th at the age of 85. He is survived by Yvonne, his loving wife of 57 years, his three children Trevor (Amy), Warren (Sylvia) and Jennifer and his seven grandchildren Alycia, Chelsea, Johnathan, Nathaniel, Sabrina, Rachel and Megan.

Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, Phillip had many interests growing up including participating in bodybuilding competitions where he was often complimented for his well-developed legs. He was also musically talented having played both the tenor sax and the clarinet in a jazz-dance band which he led.

His legacy really began though when he spotted a beautiful young woman from across the sanctuary at church. Determined to win her affection, he fought valiantly for her love and with his charm & perseverance, he married the love of his life, Yvonne Song on February 13, 1965.

In 1975, Phillip made the courageous decision to pack up the family with what little they had and moved to Vancouver, Canada for a new life. Despite a difficult start, he managed to raise his children providing them with every opportunity for the best life this country had to offer. Phillip lived for his family whom he loved and cherished. He was never afraid to show his affection for Yvonne in public always reaching for her hand when walking. They had a playful nature that was envied by many. Phillip gave everything he could to his children and would do anything and everything for his grandchildren with whom he celebrated at every opportunity.

Phillip & Yvonne were the glue that kept their extended family together. Their basement was specifically renovated so they could host large gatherings and every Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving, they would host the most elaborate potlucks that everyone looked forward to. Mouthwatering curry, prawns, salmon, turkey, salads and every kind of dessert imaginable were not only served but devoured.

Phillip had a strong & unwavering faith and loved his Lord Jesus. For many years, he was actively involved at Olivet Baptist Church in New Westminster putting his bookkeeping skills to good use while serving as Church Treasurer for decades. His voice could also be heard every Sunday morning and in every cantata as he joyfully sang along with Yvonne in the Church Choir and on special occasions, he was even joined by his children. Phillip had a true passion for music and will be fondly remembered for how his face would light up when singing. He will be missed dearly by all who knew him.

A memorial service will take place on Friday, July 15th at 2 pm at Olivet Baptist Church, 613 Queens Street, New Westminster, BC. In lieu of flowers and to honour Yvonne, donations may be made in his memory to the Alzheimer Society of BC or to Olivet Baptist Church.

The journey continues...
