Paddy Chow Wing, our beloved and remarkable Uncle Paddy peacefully passed at 94 years old.
A fourth generation Chinese-Canadian, Paddy was born in Quesnel to Yip Shee and C.S. Wing as the fourth child of five.
He lived his early years in Soda Creek near Williams Lake and in Wells, as a country boy who loved the outdoors. His family moved to Vancouver Chinatown in 1939 where he completed high school.
He was trained as an accountant but it was clear from an early age that he loved the stage. After he won a local dance contest with a tap solo, he quickly became a self-taught professional entertainer. Performing on stages across North America, dressed in a crisp black tuxedo with a top hat and cane, Paddy defied racial typecasting of the times and was a pioneer for Chinese-Canadian performers. From movie sets to theater stages, Paddy’s artistry and grace captured audiences. Bringing joy and laughter to many, he was the epitome of the song and dance showman. In his spare time, he was also a figure skater and champion skier.
For his nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews, he was a devoted and encouraging force in their lives. He inspired those he loved to nurture their passions and talents. He was also a guiding spiritual soul that brought positivity and peace to the family. Paddy continued to share his love for music well into his later years, often voluntarily singing at senior care homes and downtown eastside community centres.
A humble yet exceptional man, he brought light and joy to all who knew him.
His legacy and his laughter will forever live in our hearts.
Paddy is survived by his nieces Valerie Wong and Linda-Mae Chan-Kent, and his nephews Howard Jang, Douglas Jang, Haine Wing, Muzz Wing, and Mike Wing; his grand nieces and nephews Hilary Johal, Lindsay Chan-Kent, Shannon Chan-Kent, Marissa Chan-Kent, Willie Wing, Natalie Wing and Jeremy Eisch.
Paddy is predeceased by his siblings Bill Wing, Eva Jang, Lorna Wong, and David Wing.
Thank you to the Villa Carital staff for providing extraordinary care and embracing Paddy’s talents, keeping his spirit uplifted through his song and dance.
