Norman died peacefully after a full and active life on April 28, 2012 in Vancouver at the age of 92. He will be lovingly remembered by his son Roy (Lori), daughters Tanis and Eileen (Randy), seven grandchildren Andrew, Elizabeth, Duncan, David, Kaela, Liam and Alina, and many close friends and relatives. He was predeceased by Win, his beloved wife of 53 years.
A gracious and generous man, Norman’s cheerful demeanor and ongoing pursuit and enjoyment of outdoor activities and travel in his senior years was an inspiration to those around him. Born in 1919 in Lewisham, England, Norman pursued his dream of flying by apprenticing at Saunders-Roe aircraft design and manufacturing company on the Isle of Wight, and then serving as a pilot in the RAF. After the war, Norman’s love for adventure and the outdoors led him and Win to Canada in 1948 where they settled in West Vancouver in a house they built together. While working as a mechanical engineer for BC Hydro from 1954 until his retirement, Norman was elected to the council of the Association of Professional Engineers and served on several of its many committees. A keen mountaineer, one of the highlights of his life was participating in the 1967 Centennial Expedition to the Saint Elias Mountain Range in the Yukon where he led the successful first ascent of Mt. Prince Edward Island. A committed naturalist, Norman also served terms as president of both the Vancouver Natural History Society (Nature Vancouver) and the Federation of BC Naturalists (BC Nature.) Industrious and inquisitive by nature, Norman refused to allow illness or advancing age to prevent him from continuing to enjoy life and to support the causes he believed in. He took up whitewater kayaking at age 60, skied until age 89 and travelled to England to visit family and friends one last time in August 2011. A loving and supportive father, grandfather and devoted friend, he will be fondly remembered and forever missed.
A celebration of Norm's life will take place on June 2, 2012 at 2338 Ottawa Avenue at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations made to the Nature Trust of BC or Nature Vancouver would be gratefully accepted.
