Norma passed away suddenly following a brief illness, leaving behind her heartbroken family. Born in Peace River, Alberta, Norma grew up on the family farm homesteaded by her parents Robert and Christina, who emigrated from Scotland. After completing high school, she attended Galt School of Nursing in Lethbridge, graduating in 1949 before embarking on a career helping others in Prince Rupert, Kitimat, Princeton and New Westminster. It was while nursing in Prince Rupert that Norma met and fell in love with her future husband Lloyd. The two married in New Westminster on October 10, 1958 and eventually bought a home next to Sullivan playground, where they remained for over 55 years. Retiring from nursing to raise her family, Norma also stayed active as a member of Queen’s Avenue United Church, the Horticultural Society, ladies five-pin bowling, and New Westminster Seniors Bureau. In her later years, failing health led to a move in 2018 to the Salvation Army’s Buchanan Lodge, where she remained until her passing. Predeceased by Lloyd (2018), and her older brothers James and Douglas, Norma is survived by her sons Lawrence (Jean), William and Brian, granddaughter Katie, and nieces and nephews in Alberta. We wish to thank the health care professionals and support workers at Buchanan Lodge for making Mother feel safe and loved in her final years. The family is foregoing a memorial service due to the threat posed by Covid. However, a private gathering is planned this summer when Norma and Lloyd will be buried together on Judah Hill overlooking Peace River. Donations to Buchanan Lodge would be gratefully accepted in Mother’s name.
