Michael Paul Raftery passed peacefully on 3 April 2024 at Point Grey Private Hospital, shy of turning 82. Michael struggled with Parkinson’s and for the last number of years and his slow steady shuffle was a clear indication of his character and determination – nothing blocked his way. Accordingly, those who worked in the Vancouver mining sector, or frequented the Terminal City Club, would recognize Michael, even if they didn’t know him.

Michael was born to Dr. Patrick and Mrs. Kathleen Raftery (nee Corrigan) in Manchester England on 30 May 1942. He is predeceased by his sisters, Patricia and Mary and is survived by his brother Kieran. Michael was married to Patricia (nee McCabe) who passed far too early in 1998, and Michael remained devoted to her the rest of his life.

In conversation the words that come up about Michael are, a gentleman and a man with a wry smile and a ready chuckle. His love of wine was second to none and the wise person always let him pick the grape for it was sure to be a treat.

The family wishes to acknowledge the staff of Point Grey Private Hospital for their care and attention to his needs. Further the family at the Terminal City Club deserve acknowledgement for the years of love and support - thank you to the gym staff, all the servers, and the management.

A Funeral Mass will take place at Holy Rosary Cathedral, Vancouver, on Wednesday, 17th April 2024 at 10:00am, followed by a cremation. Michael’s cremated remains will be laid to rest at Ocean View Burial Park, Burnaby, at a later date.
