The Reverend Marion Joyce Grove, RN, was born May 25, 1930, to Pearl (Howie) Baker and William A. Baker in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, and spent a significant and important part of her young life in Owen Sound, Ontario—she never lost her love for Sauble Beach.
There were two careers in Marion’s life. She was first a nurse (graduate of Moose Jaw General Hospital) and then a nursing instructor and supervisor (alumna of the University of Alberta, Edmonton). She taught in various schools, but primarily Vancouver Community College, and worked with students in all of the Metro Vancouver hospitals. But she felt increasingly drawn to church work, and became a pastoral visitor for Christ Church Cathedral. In 1995, she was ordained a deacon in the Anglican Church of Canada. She was a longtime associate of the Sisterhood of St. John the Divine.
And then there was a rich and full family life. While predeceased by her daughter Mala, she leaves wonderful memories for Lyndon Grove, her husband of sixty years; children Deborah Hodge, Christopher Grove and Peter Grove; their spouses, David Hodge, Kim Braidwood and Susan Layng; son-in-law Donald Temple; grandchildren Emily Garner, Michael Hodge, Helen Hodge and Alexandra Grove; their spouses, Trish Garner, Jocelyn Muller and Darren Bowell; and great-grandchildren Finn, Jack and Molly Garner and Xavier Hodge.
Marion died August 22, 2013, with family and close friends present. A Funeral Mass will be said at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, August 29, at Christ Church Cathedral, 690 Burrard Street, Vancouver, with the Very Reverend Peter Elliott as celebrant. Interment to follow at the Church of Christ the Redeemer, Cloverdale. Should there be a wish to make memorial donations, appropriate choices would be Christ Church Cathedral social outreach programs and the Sisterhood of St. John the Divine, 233 Cummer Avenue, Toronto ON M2M 2E8.
