Maria Marta Grant neé Redruello passed away peacefully in Vancouver, Canada in the early hours of Wednesday July 14th, 2021, after an extended period of illness which she faced with great fortitude. She will be sorely missed and cherished by husband Callum and children Alexander and Fiona to whom she was devoted. She will also be deeply missed by her brothers and their families in Argentina, and by many others in Argentina, Canada, and beyond.

Marta was born in Buenos Aires on May 14, 1939. Marta set off to discover the world in 1969, first studying in Vermont, USA, and then in 1971 moving to her adopted home of Toronto, Canada. There she met Callum and they tied the knot on June 17, 1977. Together they had two children, Alexander and Fiona, and embarked on a life together traveling near and far, making friends along the way. Marta was a steadfast friend to many with an ability to connect with people in a way that left a lasting impression on all who she came in contact with. She loved to talk, write long letters, enjoy good food and wine, and dance. Forever positive, with Marta there was always a reason to celebrate. Her many stories told of adventures in North and South America, Australia, Oman, London, and Scotland, just to mention a few.

She pursued a dedicated and successful career as a bilingual Spanish-English interpreter initially in Toronto and later in Vancouver serving various government agencies and public companies. This became a source of great satisfaction for her through which she made numerous friendships with fellow interpreters that have lasted to this day.

Her dream to have grandchildren was fulfilled on April 16, 2020, when she welcomed her first grandchild, Ember Leydier, who filled her with light and joy during the last year of her life. Marta cared deeply for her parents, Carlos and Edith, two brothers, Cabe and Nero, and families in Argentina. Some notable lifetime friendships include Adriana Molder and family, Berta, Beryl, Bill and Joyce, Douglas, Iris, Leo, Mariluz, and Marta Q.

The Family would like to extend its immense gratitude to the ALS Society of BC and the teams at GF Strong and Vancouver Coastal Health for their support and attentiveness over the last couple of years. A celebration of life will be held in Toronto, Canada, and Buenos Aires, Argentina, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the Family asks that donations be made in Marta’s name to ALS BC’s Project Hope by visiting https://www.alsbc.ca/in-memory-of-marta-grant-2/ . Your generous donation will help find an end to ALS.
