It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our loving wife, mother, and grandmother Maria Camara. She passed on November 4th, 2015, surrounded by family at the German Canadian House after fighting a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s. She was born in Faro, Portugal on November 22, 1935, the daughter of Maria and Amadeus Da Silva.
After losing her parents early on, Maria followed her sister to Angola, Africa. There she met the love of her life, Jorge. They were married in 1970 and started their life together in Vila da Ponte and Caala. They were blessed with two children. Civil unrest led them to flee to South Africa in the hopes of finding safety and peace. Following this uncertainty they returned to Portugal and eventually made their way to Vancouver, Canada where they settled in the hopes of creating a better life for themselves and their children.
Maria worked in the kitchen at Vancouver Community College for 20+ years. Her greatest joy came from spending time with her family and especially her grandchildren. After her retirement she enjoyed returning to Portugal every summer to visit with relatives and old friends.
Maria's gentle spirit, infectious laugh, compassion and endless giving live on in the hearts of her family and friends.
She will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 45 years Jorge and children Jorge Jr. (Maria) and Sonia (Raymond) and grandchildren Dimitri, Amelia, Yianni, Isabella, Cristiano, and Natalia. She will be missed dearly by all.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of BC.
