It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother. Predeceased by her parents; brothers Ernesto and Osvaldo; husband Lino; she is survived by her daughters Renata and Vilma; brother Guido; sister Caterina; many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends in Italy, Australia, and Canada.
Mom was born in Sacile, Italy to Antonio and Carmela Brait (nee Cordazzo). Her formative years were during WWII which shaped her character to exemplify hard work, sacrifice, and a deep devotion to her Catholic faith.
At 17 years of age she set off looking for work in Switzerland, eventually stopping in Bern where she worked in various shops and as a nanny. She would send much needed money back to her family in Italy. While in Bern she learned to speak German and French which was of great benefit to her daughter Vilma when she was learning French at school.
Back in Italy Mom apprenticed as a seamstress. She loved to cross-stitch, knit, and make new clothes for us when we were young. Later in life we had a personal alternations specialist whenever we needed.
She made the long journey to Western Australia where she married our father Lino Zanchettin on June 8, 1955. Shortly thereafter Renata was born. Life was challenging so when an opportunity presented itself in 1958 to move to Hamilton, Ontario to join other members of the Zanchettin family, they did. Eventually Dad found work in the forest industry in B.C. and the family moved for the last time to Vancouver where Vilma was born to complete the family.
Mom loved to tend to her flower and vegetable gardens. She would read the daily newspaper as a way of improving her English and she was an avid sports fan especially of hockey, Canadian football, and tennis. She dedicated herself to her family and her faith grounded her in everything that she did.
Grazie Mamma for showing us the way. We love you and though our hearts are broken now, our faith is secure in the belief we will be reunited with you and Dad and all our loved ones another day.
Rest in Peace, you have earned your reward.
Mass of Christian burial will take place at 11AM on March 14, 2024 at St. Jude’s Parish & Shrine, 3078 Renfrew Street, Vancouver, B.C., Reverend Salvador Reyes (Father Jun) presiding. Entombment to follow at the Abby Mausoleum, Ocean View Funeral Home, 4000 Imperial Street, Burnaby, B.C.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to BC Children’s Hospital, Alzheimer Society of B.C., or a charity of your choice. Thank you to all the medical professionals that cared for our mom over the years and to all our family and friends for your love, support, and prayers during this difficult time.
