Louis was born Anton Luthwig Kaufmann, on the family farm near Engelfeld, Saskatchewan, the third of five children, to Robert and Angela, who had both emigrated from Switzerland. Lou's roots provided him with a strong life-long work ethic. As a young man, he relocated with his brothers to the West Coast and served his fellow workers on the docks as the Founding President of the ILWU Local 500 in the Port of Vancouver for many years. Lou was a brilliant strategist and chess master. He lived life passionately on his own terms and was a fearless and absolutely unforgettable person, who used every opportunity to articulate his unique philosophies. Lou died peacefully and was surrounded by the love of his family, the centre of his universe, during a short illness, bravely borne. He is survived by former wife Betty and their son Robert. Lou is also mourned by his wife Mazoe and their son André, daughter Angelika and son-in-law Tili, as well as his brothers Fred, Ray (Jean), John (Annette) and sister Yvonne and all their children and families. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Star of the Sea Catholic Church 1153 Fir Street, White Rock B.C. at 11am Friday January 6, 2012 with internment at Gardens of Gethsemani 1588, 32 Avenue, Surrey. Thereafter Lou's family and friends will gather at Good Shepherd parish for refreshments. All are welcome.
"Today is the best day of all possible days, in this world, the best of all possible worlds"
