With great sadness we announce the passing of Elvino (Al) Lopes, our uncle and friend to so many. Elvino passed away peacefully overnight at AgeCare Carlton in Burnaby at the age of 91. He was predeceased on their golden anniversary in 2019 by his beloved wife, Frances.
Born in Pombal, Portugal, as a young man, Elvino immigrated to Canada in 1957 where he built a good life through hard work. He met and married Frances in 1969 and, together, they worked in the residential apartment industry with Frances’ parents for many years and continued in the business past their retirement. Elvino and Frances were able to live in their beloved apartment near Central Park for over 30 years.
As well as being a natural storyteller, Elvino will be lovingly remembered for always going out of his way to help others and the many barbecues and picnics he hosted together with Frances in Central Park. He lived a long and fulfilled life enjoying Frances’ cooking, having drives on sunny days, and attending family and community events and Our Lady of Fatima Portuguese Parish until health no longer allowed.
Elvino was proud of his Portuguese heritage as well as being a Canadian citizen. He was preceded in death by his wife Frances, parents Sebastião and Joaquina, as well as his sister Silvina (Lino). He is survived by his niece and nephews Linda, Roger, Joseph and Michael as well as a number of great nephews and nieces.
The family would like to thank long time caregivers Margaret, Swanni, Dolores and Salve for their dedication and care which allowed Elvino to stay in the comfort of the home he loved until the age of 90.
All are welcome to celebrate Elvino’s life at a memorial service Thursday, April 11, 2024 at 11:00am at the Kearney Funeral Services Burnaby Chapel at 4715 Hasting St, Burnaby. In lieu of flowers, we invite you to make a donation in Elvino’s memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or Diabetes Canada.
