Born in Dublin Ireland on June 11, 1926, passed away peacefully in the early hours of Thursday April 8, 2021 in Vancouver Canada at the age of 94. GPO (Grandpa O) will be sadly missed by his children Seamus (Joan), Lorcan (Ann), Maura, Pauline (Zoran) and Deirdre (Doug) as well as his grandchildren Kathleen, Colleen, Sean (Jenna), Erin (Kris), Shannon (Kyle), Megan, Malcolm, Sydney and Alexandra, his boisterous great grandsons Aidan, Logan, Euan and Koda and many, many relatives in Ireland and friends and staff at Amica Arbutus Manor.
Liam, as a true Dubliner, was noted for his calmness, strong Irish wit and his devotion to his family (the Tribe as he called us). He was known to enjoy life and, like the love of his life his wife Anna Claire (Anza pre-deceased in 2006), he was always encouraging the family with his strong support and personal interest in each of them. He has left all of us to remember his principled approach to life, a love of education, ‘getting things done’ and the ability to laugh at oneself.
A funeral mass will be held at Immaculate Conception Parish in Vancouver to be celebrated by Father Paul Smith on Tuesday April 13, 2021. Due to COVID restrictions only Liam’s children and spouses may attend. A graveside ceremony at the Gardens of Gethsemani in Surrey will be held at 12 noon which will be attended by only family members as GPO will be laid to rest alongside our mother Anna Claire. As our Irish cousins have said there will be lots of catching up with her.
Many thanks go out to all the staff and friends at Amica Arbutus Manor where Dad very much enjoyed his last years and appreciated the care and friendship everyone provided him. In lieu of flowers, donations in Liam’s memory may be made to Covenant House Vancouver, St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation in Vancouver and to Vancouver General Hospital (Palliative Care Unit).
