Laurel Denise Jones (née Closkey), passed away February 1, 2025 in Langley.
Denny was born in High River, Alberta on August 22, 1938 to father Daniel John Closkey and mother Florence Eva. She moved to B.C. as a child, along with her two younger brothers Jack and Clark. Denny was an excellent student and excelled in all grades in school. In high school, she was active in sports and was a cheerleader for the North Surrey Stars basketball team.
She married Gordon Jones on October 19, 1962 at Cloverdale United Church in Surrey, B.C. and they went on to have two children - Christopher and Jennifer.
Denny graduated with honors from North Surrey High School and then attended the University of B.C. to obtain a teaching certificate and eventually a master’s degree in education. She worked as a teacher and a principal in Surrey for the next thirty-five years, taking time off to raise her two children.
Both Denny and Gordon were a very sociable couple who loved travel, dinner parties, social gatherings and friends. Denny was an active golfer, curler and skier in her younger days, but always made time in the summer months for fishing – especially fly fishing – at their favorite Chilcotin Lake.
Denny is preceded in death by her husband Gordon, son Christopher and daughter Jennifer.
Denny is survived by stepson Timothy Jones, brothers Clark Closkey and Jack Closkey, nephews and nieces Andrew Closkey, Stephen Closkey, David Closkey, Judi Closkey, Wendy Elaine (Kerswell), and Laurel Jean Adolphe.
A Celebration of Life will be held later this spring and notice will be given.
