Peacefully and on his own terms Larry passed away at UBC Hospital’s STAT Unit on Tuesday, June 20 in his 80th year. Beloved husband of Kathy Chelew of 45 special years. Son of the late Fred and Stella Holowenko. Larry is survived by his brothers Aeron and Jerry, sister Diane, and sisters-in-law Margaret and Heather. He will be greatly missed by his nephew Colin, nieces Liz, Kerry and Teresa, and extended family in Mazatlan.
Larry was born in Winnipeg and moved with his family to Vancouver in 1956. He pursued a variety of career choices which included sailing on freighters to Japan, Africa, and the US. Larry worked at Carling O’Keefe Brewery on 12th Avenue, then transferred to Molson Coors after the merger. Larry handled plant maintenance and enjoyed the many opportunities to make things better.
Larry enjoyed travelling which included England, France, Mexico, Costa Rica and the United States. His vacation and retirement time in Mazatlan was where he had great times with extended family, and friends from around the world. He loved his walks…which were miles on end. The Malecon in Mazatlan was one of his most favourite spots. Larry also loved exploring Vancouver neighbourhoods.
Larry was so appreciative of the kindness, support and humanity that everyone at the STAT Unit gave to him.
As per Larry’s request, cremation has taken place and there will be no formal service.
