It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of “John” Sun Fat Wong at Vancouver General Hospital on April 4, 2022, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He is survived by his loving wife Nysa, children Elaine, Jellena (Chris), Michael (Teri) and Melissa, and his grandchildren Connor and Keira. He is pre-deceased by his sister Smilia and brother Jeffrey, and he also leaves behind his siblings CK (Pam), Cynthia (Marcus) and Randy (Karen) as well as numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and countless friends.
Born in Hong Kong in 1942, John was ambitious and driven, with a lifelong passion for learning and a keen sense of adventure. His studies and desire to see the world took him to the UK, where he completed an Engineering diploma and travelled all over Europe. From there, he set his sights on North America, first working in Seattle and eventually settling in Burnaby, British Columbia, where he was a dedicated employee at BC Hydro for over thirty years.
When he was diagnosed with cancer, he was more determined than ever to live - and to live well. He accomplished many things during this time, including international travel, trips to LA to visit his grandchildren, and many parties and gatherings with his many friends and family members. He loved good food, single-malt whiskey, fast cars, new adventures and good company. At all times, he was unabashedly and unapologetically himself and we will miss him always.
The family would like to thank his team at BC Cancer Agency and the hospital team at Vancouver General Hospital for all their efforts. A celebration of life is being held on April 30, 2022.
In lieu of flowers, a donation to the BC Cancer Foundation (donate.bccancerfoundation.com) in John’s name would be greatly appreciated.
