FEDYK, JOHN JOSEPH - The youngest son of NICHOLAS FEDYK and NANCY MELNYK FEDYK, Dad was born on July 4th, 1925 in Biggar, Saskatchewan. Dad was predeceased by his beloved wife our mother LUZ MARIA in March, as well as previously by his parents Nicholas and Nancy, six siblings - two at infancy, Michael, Julia, Marie and Olive - several aunts and uncles, in-laws, cousins, nephews, nieces, close friends and his godmother Chana. He is survived by four sons - John Alexander (Jesús), Alan (Manuela), Carlos (Mary), and Michael (Vida) - and his grandson – Samuel, from Carlos & Mary - his sister-in-law Dolores Elia (aka Lolita), and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends spanning across many generations and around the world.

From his youth onwards, Dad believed strongly in family, honest work, community service and love of country. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Navy aboard the HMCS Arrowhead during World War II, he studied Commerce at Victoria College, and graduated from Law at the University of British Columbia. He also sang as a singing cowboy in the 1940s and 1950s and worked part-time in Vancouver’s many sawmills to support his education.

Called to the bar in 1954, Dad set up a law practice for several years on Commercial Drive before moving to downtown Vancouver, becoming Consul Ad Honorum of Ecuador in 1978 to 1994. Dad was also a proud member of Lamda Chi Alpha Fraternity, the American Trial Lawyers Association, the Spanish Club of Vancouver, the Knights of Columbus, the Multi-faith Council of Vancouver and other community organizations, even running for provincial office in the 1960s.

He married Mom Luz Maria in Mexico City in August 1959, and became father to us four sons. Together, Mom and Dad created a nurturing and safe environment for not only family but many others in the Immaculate Conception Parish and refugee communities. He enjoyed going to his sons’ music and sports events, sharing bowling leagues and bridge nights with Mom, and in later years with Mom proudly attending grandson Sam’s soccer and hockey games all over the Lower Mainland. His love for travel, gardening, Egypt, Latin American and Ukrainian history, yodelling and country music continued unabated. But his true love was Luz Maria, whom God has now called John to join in Heaven.

The family would like to thank Dr. James Yu and the nursing staff CAMU unit at UBC Hospital for Dad's final care.
