It is with deep regret and sadness that we announce the death of John Gillis, who died at home surrounded by loved ones on Friday June 15th at the age of 77. He was a beloved husband, father, brother and loyal friend to many. John is survived by his wife Margaret Askew, his sons Matthew (husband Matthew Kluke) and Andrew Gillis. Also left to mourn are step children Jennifer Terhardt (husband Claude Castonguay) and Matthew Terhardt (partner Trina White). John is predeceased by his parents William Wallace and Gladys Mary Gillis (Pike) and his brother Donald Gillis. John will be sorely missed by his surviving siblings Michael Gillis (wife Barbara), Charles Gillis (wife Milly), Jeannette Lovisa (husband Lou), Dr. Katherine Gillis (husband Dr. Paul Bragg), and sister-in-law Susan Cryderman, as well as his nieces and nephews Shelley, Stacey, Debbie, Peter, Heather, Susan and Simon. John was born in Codroy, Newfoundland and later the family moved to Gander, Newfoundland. After working as an air traffic controller, John attended the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton where he graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering. John had a long and successful career with CNCP Railways and worked in Montreal, then the interior of BC and finally Vancouver until retirement. John was always eager to repair a neighbour’s car, sip a glass of good wine and enjoy a spirited conversation. A passionate traveler, he enjoyed many adventures from cruising the Rhine River to California road-tripping. Catholic Mass will be held Wednesday June 20, 2018 at 11:00 am at Good Shepherd Roman Catholic Church, located at 2250 150th Street Surrey, B.C. Father Glenn Dion officiating. Reception to follow.
