Joan passed away peacefully in her sleep on April 3. She was born Joan Barbara Webber to Fred Webber, a sawmill manager, and Olive Webber, a war bride from England. Joan and her sister Lisa spent their early years growing up in Port Hammond, BC (Maple Ridge). Joan had one other sister, Olive, who died at the age of nine. The family moved to Vancouver where Joan attended Kitsilano High, then later worked for National Draperies and Woodward’s drapery department. She married Jerry Tate in 1942, and in 1954 gave birth to a son, Brian.
Joan was a keen gardener and an avid bridge player, hosting many riotous evenings of several tables of bridge at their home. She also loved to throw dinner parties and was a consummate hostess and cook. Later in life she took up golf and, at the ago of 52, took driving lessons for the first time. She was a member of the Musqueum Golf Club for many years.
Her final home was Point Grey Private Hospital near Kitsilano Beach, not far from where she lived with her family as a girl. We are grateful for the care that she received there. She never lost her will to improve her health, and she kept her pride in her appearance and her sharp fashion sense until the end. She loved visits and outings with her son, daughter-in-law Patricia, and their dog Daisy, who never failed to bring her great cheer.
Joan is survived by her sister Lisa and her son Brian (Patricia). A memorial will be held at 2PM, April 21, at the Canadian Memorial Centre for Peace, 1825 W. 16th Ave.
