It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our Mom, Joan Stekl on June 1, 2022 in Vancouver, BC. Joan was born to Edward and Anke Wilmink in 1935 in Campbellford Ontario. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 56 years George and by her siblings Pieter, Yolanda, and Vivian.
She is survived by her children John (Monica) and Bob (Lorraine), and her grandchildren Alexander, Natasha, and Madalyn.
Joan moved to Toronto after high school and attended secretarial college and worked as a secretary. It was here she met George while he was studying Aeronautical Engineering at U of T. They married in Campbellford in 1957 and moved to Vancouver. In 1965, Joan, George and their two young sons moved back to Toronto for two years before returning permanently to Vancouver.
When her sons were in high school she first volunteered, then worked at the Vancouver Archives for many years. This led to Chuck Davis having her contribute to The Vancouver Book sections on Major Matthews and the Archives and Kitsilano.
Joan was a fantastic cook, gardener, and mother who enjoyed cross country skiing, cycling, and walking.
She loved vacationing in Sunriver, Oregon, where she and her family regularly visited for 20 years.
Joan was an avid bridge player, aquafit participant, investor, and loved reading.
She was a much loved Wife, Mom, and Gramma who will be greatly missed. A celebration of Joan's life will happen at a future date. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Union Gospel Mission or The Arthritis Research Centre Society of Canada.
Joan's family would like to thank the staff of Crofton Manor for the loving care Joan received the past ten months.
