Jim Strilesky

1950 — 2024

Vancouver

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of James “Jim” Strilesky on December 4th after a short battle with Leukaemia. Jim spent his final months like he did the past 52 years, with his beloved wife Beverley by his side.

Jim was born in Smoky Lake, Alberta where he spent his childhood years before moving to Vancouver. He graduated from John Oliver High School as Valedictorian and Student Council President. Always a proud “Joker” he developed lifelong friendships during these years. He went on to earn his degree in English from the University of British Columbia and a Masters in Education from Western Washington University. A lifelong learner with a passion for writing and education ultimately became 33 years of joy as a teacher and administrator serving the Richmond School District. Respected by his colleagues and students, his meticulous style and professionalism remained a trademark throughout his career.

Devoted to the Beta Theta Pi fraternity throughout his life. He established bonds with his brothers in the fraternity house and athletic fields that carried into leadership roles as a District Chief, member of the Board of Trustees and finally Scholarship Coordinator. He wrote “I have worked closely with some incredibly wise and able men whom have continued to add depth and richness to my understanding of life and relationships”.

Anyone who met Jim knew his commitment to personal fitness. A dedicated swimmer most mornings he earned his breakfast and inspired others to lead a healthy lifestyle. He loved skiing, hiking and camping, never shying away from adventures. Summers were spent at Point Roberts where he could be seen enjoying a nap in his kayak, floating with the current. These summers at the Point became an indelible source of happiness and appreciation for time spent together as a family eventually including grandchildren who visited to spend sunny days on the sandbars.

The retirement years, thankfully there were many, afforded Jim and Bev the time they desired to ride their peculiar folding bikes around Europe, amassing more than 40 trips. Jim eagerly followed Bev to remote mountain castles, quaint villages and down majestic alpine descents. France was the favourite destination with easy days characterized by 50km of riding. These trips inspired friends and family to join them over the years. Everyone came to appreciate that the day ended with wine, bread and cheese on the patio.

Jim is survived and missed by his loving wife, Beverley; son Michael (Jennifer); grandchildren: Taylor, Ivy and Grayson, mother Ollie (95 years of age), brother Brian (Heather) and sister Carol (Ric) and preceded in death by his late father Mike. Sadly Jim’s best friend Dave passed away only days earlier, remaining connected throughout their journey in life.

The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the physicians, nurses and staff at VGH for their wonderful care shown to Jim during his stay. In lieu of flowers a donation to the VGH/UBC foundation would be greatly appreciated.
