Jean passed away peacefully at Elim Village Nursing Home on September 16th. Jean was born in Oxford, England before leaving the UK in 1960 to Jamaica for nearly 4 years where her favourite souvenir was the birth of her children Susan & John, before moving to Canada in 1963. In 2006 David & Jean moved from their long-time home in Arvida, Quebec to BC to be with their children and (now) 4 grandchildren. Jean received her degree in physics in 1956 as the only female in her class. She worked in industry in the UK and Canada and then as a teacher in Jamaica and Canada. Jean worked for Alcan in Jonquiere as a Scientist Librarian and latterly translating technical documents from French to English. While she spent time teaching high school sciences, she always said her favourite time was a few years teaching Grade 4 kids.
As a mother she was an active, loving mother and wife, who along with a passion for tennis, swimming, sailing was an especially avid gardener. Jean was an integral part of an Anglican/United Church shared ministry and the many offshoot volunteer organizations. After moving to BC they spent many part-weeks in Surrey helping to look after her two grandsons and giving her granddaughters in Vancouver the love of soup and tinned fish. On weekends they rarely missed Sunday dinner with her granddaughters in Vancouver.
Jean is survived by her daughter Susan (husband Eamon), her son John (wife My Kieu), four grandchildren Charlotte, Georgia, Joseph, & Daniel. Predeceased by her husband David (February 2013) of 57 years, sister-in-law Susan Goodchild (March 2024) and brother John Barnett (December 2016).
We would like to thank the amazing staff of 3 West at Elim Village for their outstanding care and attention looking after our Mum.
A Celebration of Life will take place on Saturday, November 9 , 2024 at 11am at Elim Village, Surrey BC.
