Jean passed away after many years of living with dementia. She was predeceased by her husband of 60 years Dr. Robert (Bob) Francis Lane, her older sister Marjorie Mowatt, and her parents John and Cecilia Mowatt. She is survived by her three children: Duncan Lane (Anne), Jennifer Tutt (Richard), and Randy Lane (Gail Bell), and by her younger sister Betty Wiens. She is also survived by her three grandchildren: Stephanie Lane (Nick Jones), Brittany Willment (Jay) and Graeme Tutt (Kasey); by her three great grandchildren: Roman, Breckin, and Sybil; and by many other relatives.

Jean grew up in Kerrisdale, where she attended Maple Grove Elementary School (she lived right across the street in the 6200 block of Cypress Street) and Magee Secondary School (where she sang in operettas). The family moved to the University Endowment Lands part way through her years at UBC (Arts, 1950). Jean would walk to the university with some of her professors. She worked at the Faculty Club, joined the Alpha Phi sorority, and made many friends. She met Bob at a sorority/fraternity mixer, and they were married in 1952.

Jean moved to Toronto to join Bob during his final year of medical school.  After that, they lived in Vancouver, Bella Bella, Chilliwack, and Richmond. Jean was a good friend and confidante. She was a gracious and generous hostess at gatherings of family and friends. She knew her way around a kitchen and made wonderful baked goods (Blueberry Dutch Cake!). Her Thanksgiving and Christmas turkey dinners were truly memorable. Her stuffed pork tenderloin and Hungarian chicken never lasted very long on dinner plates.

Jean and Bob were avid collectors of Canadian art, and they enjoyed attending the Arts Club Theatre and the Gateway Theatre. Jean collected an impressive number of Japanese inkwells and was an accomplished maker of cards and not a bad bridge player.  She was a member of PEO and the University Women’s Club, supported higher education, and gave generously to charities.  She provided much care and support to her parents, her sister, her aunt Irene Sanderson, and her husband in the final years of their lives.

After Bob’s death in 2012, Jean lived at home with the support of caregivers. She spent the final four years of her life at South Granville Park Lodge, and the family is very grateful for the attentive care she received there. No service will be held.
