We are heartbroken to announce the sudden and unexpected passing of James Peter Shumka just shy of his 59th birthday.
James is dearly missed by his wife and best friend, Susan, his sons Trevor and Adam (Emily), his mother Rosemary, brother Dave (Josephine), sister Beth and many nieces, nephews, in-laws, friends and colleagues. He was predeceased by his father, Bob and his parents-in-law Bill and Helen Graham.
Born in New Westminster, James was a true west-coaster who built his life with Sue so that they could always be near the ocean. In his youth, James had the fortunate combination of athletic ability, great intellect and exceptional work ethic – which led to his personal and professional success. James graduated UBC with B.Comm./LL.B degrees in 1988. He was a founding principal of Legacy Tax & Trust Lawyers and was sought out for his expertise on complex tax issues and for his thoughtful mentorship.
James’ true legacy was his life outside of work. He met Sue on their first day of university in 1981 and knew immediately she was his soulmate. They married at age 20 and never looked back. He was a wonderful husband and father, and was never happier than when he was with his family – Sue, Trevor and Adam were his world.
James had a clever sense of humour, a curious mind, and a passion for adventure. He loved to travel with his friends and family and was fortunate to have explored almost all the corners of this world. He was remarkably selfless and would do anything to help others. He was a loyal friend and gave great advice. He was always calm in any situation and helped others put things into perspective. He was someone to aspire to be like. We are all better people for the time we shared with him.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Peace Portal Alliance Church, South Surrey, BC on September 1st at 1:00 pm.
