With great sadness we announce the passing of Irene Gout (nee Cohen) after a sudden devastating illness. She died peacefully, surrounded by her loving family. She will be thoroughly missed by her husband of almost 47 years, Peter, her daughter Denise (Greg; Ryan and Aimee), her daughter Michele, brothers Rene and Ferry, and sisters Ilse (Ruud) and Monique, her nephews Marc, Michael, Jeroen (Joyce) and Lars (Beth) and many more relatives, friends and colleagues in Vancouver, Winnipeg and The Netherlands. Irene was born in Salatiga (Java) in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia). She moved to Holland in 1958, obtained a BSc in Chemistry at Leiden University and married her high school sweetheart, Peter. In 1966, they immigrated to Vancouver, Canada. Some years after the birth of her children she started to work at the Scotiabank for over 30 years until the age of 67. Irene was extremely dedicated to her job and maintained close relationships with her colleagues after her retirement. She was a very special, lovable person. She enjoyed the outdoors; hiking and walking were among her favorite activities. She was a girls’ soccer coach and a big Vancouver Whitecaps, Canucks and B.C. Lions fan. She was intelligent, compassionate, kind and extremely devoted to her family and friends. In recent years, Oma Irene loved spending time with her grandchildren who brought her much joy. Irene was a dynamic and fun person interested in a wide variety of subjects. Irene and Peter were very happily married and enjoyed many years of traveling across North America, Europe and Australia. A Celebration of Irene’s Life will be held on Saturday April 3 at 10:00 AM at the Vancouver Unitarian Church (949 West 49th at Oak street) with a reception to follow. We thank the VGH-ICU staff for their excellent and compassionate care. If so desired, donations in Irene Gout’s name can be directed to the VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation. Irene, we miss you so much.
