Ida Maria Teresa Socorro Assumption was born and raised in Loutolim Goa, India on March 8th, 1933, to her loving parents Espírito Santo and Maria Lucilia Mascarenhas, where she was one of seven children. At school, she became fluent in Portuguese.
On December 28th, 1952, in Goa, Ida married her beloved late Alex Assumption. From there, she would go on to have 5 children, Tonina, Francis, Johnny, Veronica, and Rui. Through taking care of her children, Ida was able to refine her skills in cooking, sewing and tutoring others in English. She passed down to her children the values of her faith, hard work, and charisma.
As time passed, Ida raised and saw her children Francis, Veronica, and Rui marry and carry on their adulthood lives. While Francis and Carmen Assumption and Veronica and Eugene Demello stayed in India, Rui and Sharon Assumption immigrated to Canada in 1998 with their children. Since 2000, Ida has spent her time between Canada and India visiting her grandchildren, Alex and Andrea Assumption and Olivia and Eva Demello.
During her later years. Ida enjoyed listening to music, walking and tending through her garden, and playing bingo. We found this to be a blessing, for her to finally rest and enjoy life. In our frequent visits, we would talk about her life, practice our Portuguese and Konkani, and get her rating on our cooking. We thank the staff at Willingdon Care Center who took exceptional care of her.
In her last hours, her family held her hand while she lay comfortably in her bed until she passed on. We not only remember Ida as a caring, driven, and joyful devout Catholic, but also as someone who sacrificed most of her life for the betterment of others. We will carry her selflessness and memory with us.
